Biog - Jim Bernardin

Jim Bernardin is the creator of 'Steel Pan Events' and has been a professional musician for over 20 years. In that time Jim has enjoyed a varied career, primarily playing drums and percussion for many well-known entertainers, in orchestras and theatre pits around the UK, as well as spending four years as a drummer on cruise-ships early on in his career. After returning to land he settled in the North West where he married and his children were born. During this period he took on a variety of projects, the most memorable and enjoyable being Frank Zappa tribute band, 'The Catholic Girls' and Salsa band 'ESO-ES'.

In 1995 Jim returned to university in Manchester and in 1998 gained a first class honours degree in music after studying marimba with Liz Gilliver (BBC Philharmonic, RNCM). At that time he became a frequent freelance contributor to the UK's leading drum magazine, 'Rhythm'.

In 2001 Jim created Shake Rattle and Roll, taking a madcap musical show and workshops to schools across the South East of England and abroad. Five years later, after selling the business, Jim set up a brand new company, World Music Workshops, and he now divides his time between performing and teaching world music in schools, publishing, arranging music and developing his company into a world music educational resource.'

Seven years ago, Jim adapted and applied his marimba techniques to the 'Double Seconds' Steel Pans, after a fascination with the instrument for many years. Aside from World Music Workshops, steel pan playing has now become Jim's main gigging instrument, keeping him busy throughout the year.

'When the opportunity arises, Jim teams up with top pannist, Rachel Heyward, to offer a fantastic night of steel pan solo and duo performances on a range of pans and some scintillating latin percussion playing!'
